Heat Pump Water Heater Install with Custom Protective Enclosure

Most water heaters get stuffed in a garage or utility closet and forgotten about. This setup required a different approach - the unit needed to live outside, which meant we had to think through how to protect it and keep it running efficiently long-term.

We installed a A.O. Smith Voltex commercial-grade heat pump water heater tucked inside a custom metal enclosure built right against the exterior of the home. The enclosure is vented on both the upper and lower panels to allow proper airflow - something a heat pump water heater absolutely needs to operate the way it's supposed to. Without adequate air exchange, efficiency drops fast.

The inside of the enclosure tells the full story of a clean, thought-out install. Insulated pipe wrapping on all the lines, a properly sized expansion tank mounted right at the unit, and a dedicated exhaust vent running up through the top of the enclosure. Nothing crammed in, nothing skipped.

Heat pump water heaters work differently than a standard electric or gas unit. Instead of generating heat directly, they pull heat from the surrounding air and use it to warm the water - which is why they're so much more efficient. That also means placement and airflow matter a lot, and that's exactly why the enclosure was designed the way it was.

The end result is a setup that's protected from the elements, properly ventilated, and built to perform. If your current water heater is aging out or you're looking at more efficient options, this is the kind of upgrade worth having a real conversation about.
